Encaustic · painting with beeswax
Maï Ver Eecke gives an ancient Egyptian technique a contemporary form. Her work can be seen in the Netherlands, Belgium and France, even in Paris.
Encaustic
Encaustic comes from ancient Egypt. Artists painted portraits with it that were meant to last for eternity. The word comes from the Greek enkaio: to burn in by heat.
Maï builds her paintings up from layers of beeswax with pigment and resin. With a heat gun or gas torch, she melts each layer together with the layer beneath it. This creates the layering and transparency that characterize her work.
Paris
The Salon d'Automne is the event for contemporary art in Paris: more than 1000 artists each show one work. In 2024 Maï won the « Prix de la Peinture », awarded by Les Amis du Salon d'Automne, in the Environmental Art section. In late October 2026 she was selected for the third time.
In her own words
My starting point is to place an old painting technique in a new light. Discovering technical elements and applications is central.
Small Artworks
Small, unique paintings in beeswax, at an affordable price: 10 x 10 cm for € 20 and 12 x 12 cm for € 25. Each small work comes with a hanging hook.
Workshops
Maï offers encaustic workshops, usually one on one. In recent years she has focused mainly on people who want to give their own art form an extra dimension, such as photographers, textile artists and painters who may want to integrate beeswax into their work.
